Cross Country Rolls to Win in First Meet of 1999

EVANSTON, Ill. - Led by sophomore Cherisse Lancaster, the Northwestern University women?s cross country team rolled to an easy win at the third annual UIC Home Opener. The two-mile event was conducted in Palos Heights, Ill.

With Lancaster breaking the tape in 10:57, the Wildcats took the first four spots and then sixth to score 16 points, just one off a perfect score. Loyola of Chicago was second with 44 points, while Northern Illinois was the only other team under 100 with a score of 91.

Jennifer Anderson was second for the Wildcats, clocking 11:17, while Mary Beth Ellis was third in 11:22 and Karen Rogers was right on her heels in 11:23. Shannon McGowan was the ?Cats other scorer, placing sixth in 11:28.

Northwestern?s other runners ? Maria Badacarro, Clarissa Hitchon, Maureen Farrell, Rachel Evjen, Laura Evans and Krista Puttler ? all finished in the top 15 on the day.

The Wildcats will race again next Saturday, competing at the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis.
