In his 15th and final season at NU, Don Perrelli guided the 1998-99 women's basketball team to a 12-16 mark. The team was 7-5 in non-conference action and 5-11 against Big Ten foes. In the Big Ten Tournament, the Wildcats defeated Iowa (75-71), then fell to top-ranked Purdue (79-56) in the quarterfinals. Perrelli notched his 250th win when the team defeated Indiana during the final regular season home stand. He leaves Northwestern and enters retirement as the school's all-time winningest women's basketball coach with a 251-181 mark.

The Wildcats also bid farewell to senior guard Megan Chawansky, one of the best all-around players to ever wear the Purple and White. The two-time captain led the team in scoring (17.4 ppg), assists (5.4 apg) and steals (2.0 spg) en route to being named a first team All-Big Ten selection by the media and a second team All-Big Ten pick by the coaches. Chawansky graduates as the first player in Northwestern history to record over 1,700 points, 600 rebounds, 500 assists and 150 steals in her career.

Junior forward Leslie Schock emerged as the team's second-leading scorer (15.1 ppg) and third-leading rebounder (6.2 rpg). Sophomore point guard Dana Leonard was the team's leading three-point threat with a .337 percentage from long range (57-of-169). Sophomore center Tami Sears led the squad in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and double-doubles (seven). She finished as the Big Ten's leading offensive rebounder with 4.07 offensive caroms per game.

A major highlight of the season included a 48-41 win over then No. 17-ranked Ohio State on Jan. 17. The game marked the second annual "Pack the Place" promotion which saw Welsh-Ryan Arena occupied by a record-setting 3,779 fans.
