Two Wildcat Athletes Honored by GTE/CoSIDA

EVANSTON, Ill. - In recognition of their work both in and out of the classroom, junior women's swimmer Amy Balcerzak (Sharon, Pa./The Peddie School) and senior wrestler Sam Neider (Rocky River, Ohio/St. Edward) have been named to the GTE Academic All-District At-Large Teams as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Balcerzak is a three-time All-American in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and has earned a total of 15 All-America honors in her three seasons. Last month, Balcerzak became the first Northwestern woman to win a Big Ten breaststroke championships as she captured both the 100 and 200 breaststroke titles. In the classroom, Balcerzak carries a 3.77 GPA in biological sciences and is a two-time CSCAA Academic All-American.
Neider is a two-time All-American, earning the honor at 190 pounds in 1998 and 197 pounds this season. He has compiled 116 career wins, fifth on Northwestern's all-time list. Neider has a 3.71 GPA in engineering and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
The men's Academic All-America team will be announced on April 20. The women's team will be announced on April 22. A student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, a starter or important reserve and possess a minimum 3.2 GPA to be considered for the award.
