EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern had three players selected to the 1999 All-Big Ten women's tennis team, announced late on Tuesday by the conference. Senior Laura Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), junior Katherine Nasser (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and sophomore Shannon Duffy (Plano, Texas/Plano) all represented Northwestern on this year's All-Big Ten team.
It marks the first time that Guignon has been named All-Big Ten in her career. As team co-captain, she helped lead NU to its first Big Ten Championship since 1986. She contributed from the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions throughout the year and teamed with Nasser at the No. 1 doubles spot to tally a 9-1 conference record. In Big Ten singles competition, Guignon posted a 7-3 record.
Nasser made the All-Big Ten team for the third-straight year. She played at the No. 1 singles position all season and went 4-6 against Big Ten opponents.
Duffy is making her second consecutive appearance on the All-Big Ten team. This season, she went undefeated against conference foes in doubles (10-0) and nearly accomplished the same in singles (9-1). In the Big Ten championship match last Sunday, it was Duffy's 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Wisconsin's April Gabler at No. 3 singles that gave NU the title.
The last time Northwestern had three players earn All-Big Ten status was in 1987 (Katrina Adams, Diane Donnelly and Lynn Nabors).
