Standring named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week.

EVANSTON, Ill. -Sophomore pitcher/outfielder J.J. Standring (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) was named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week today for his performance against Illinois Saturday. Standring pitched the first shutout of his college career, hurling a complete game six-hitter and giving up no walks. Northwestern went on to take three out of four baseball games from Illinois, the 1998 Big Ten Champion, for the first time in a series since 1991.
Standring is second in the Big Ten in earned run average for conference games with a 1.38 mark. For the season, Standring is 4-2 overall with a 4.84 ERA. At the plate he is batting .284 with 19 RBIs in 25 games, and had a 13-game hitting streak earlier in the year.
A two-sport athlete, Standring is the No. 1 punter on Northwestern's football team. Last fall he punted 78 times for a 41.5-yard average.
Northwestern plays its next home baseball game Tuesday, April 13, against UW-Milwaukee at 3 p.m. NU hosts a four game series with Penn State April 16-18.
