No. 1 Seed Northwestern Beats Purdue to Advance

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 1 seed Northwestern Womens tennis team defeated eighth-seeded Purdue, 4-1, to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Championships, held at Michigan States Outdoor Tennis Courts.

Purdue won the first two doubles matches, to claim the doubles point. NUs doubles team of sophomore Shannon Duffy (Plano, Texas) and junior Leigh Weinraub (Dix Hills, N.Y.) won the third match, 8-3.

Northwestern swept the Boilermakers in the singles bracket, winning the first four matches to earn the team victory. In the No. 2 spot, Northwestern senior Laura Guignon (St. Louis, Mo.) won decisively with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Other Wildcats followed suit. Sophomore Colleen Cheng (Hillsborough, Calif.)won 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 4 match, freshman Lia Jackson (Glendale, Wis.) won 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 and junior Jennifer Lutgert (Evergreen, Colo.) also won in straight sets at the No. 6 spot to finish off the Boilermakers. The first and third matches were abandoned.

The victory advanced Northwestern to the semifinals where it will face fourth-seeded Illinois tomorrow at 10 a.m. CDT.
