EVANSTON, Ill. - By virtue of winning the Big Ten Conference regular season women's tennis title, Northwestern earned the No. 1 seed at this weekend's Big Ten Women's Tennis Championships, being held on the campus of Michigan State in East Lansing. The Wildcats will see their first action on Friday, April 30 at 10 a.m. EDT versus either eighth-seeded Purdue or ninth-seeded Michigan. The full tournament pairings are listed below.
Northwestern (15-4, 9-1 Big Ten) enters the tournament having won nine of its last 10 dual matches and eight-straight. The only blemish on the Wildcats' conference record is a 4-3 loss to Illinois, suffered on Feb. 28.
Under first-year head coach Claire Pollard, the 23rd-ranked Wildcats will be seeking their first Big Ten Championship since back-to-back titles in 1985 and 1986. This is only the third time in the 18-year history of Big Ten women's tennis that Northwestern has won the regular season crown. In 1985, the team finished 12-0 and in 1986 it went 10-0 in the conference.
