Joe Hietpas Named GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North) has been named to the GTE Academic All-America Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hietpas was one of three Big Ten players named Academic All-Americans.

Hietpas, an economics major, maintains a 3.85 grade point average, the highest of any player named to the second team. He finished the 1999 season third on the Wildcats with a .342 batting average. He led NU in home runs (11), doubles (13), RBIs (44) and slugging percentage (.588). He led conference catchers with 13 runners thrown out in Big Ten play.
