Jeremy Kurella Selected All-Mideast Region

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore shortstop Jeremy Kurella (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) has been selected to the 1999 All-Mideast Region second team by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection for 1999. Kurella started at shortstop in all 53 games for NU this season, leading the team in batting with a .348 average.

Kurella's 73 hits, 53 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases (fifth in the Big Ten) were all best on the team. He spent most of the year among the conference top five in hitting, and finished among the conference top 10 in assists (150) and double plays turned (34). This summer Kurella is trying out with the 1999 USA Baseball National Team, which began camp June 8 in Tucson, Ariz.
