Jeremy Kurella Invited to Play with USA Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. -- USA Baseball has invited Northwestern sophomore shortstop Jeremy Kurella (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) to participate in its summer camp for the 1999 USA Baseball National Team. Kurella, the 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was a preseason All-Big Ten selection by Baseball America this season. He leads NU and is fifth in the Big Ten with a .377 average, and also leads the team in runs, hits and stolen bases.
The 1999 USA Baseball National Team will begin camp June 8 in Tucson, Ariz. Coached by Texas A&M head coach Mark Johnson, the team will play the Japan Collegiate All-Star Team in Japan from June 22-July 1, compete in a US West-sponsored Western United States Tour and play in the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kan., Aug. 6-17
Northwestern completed a difficult two-week stretch in which it lost seven of eight Big Ten games, including six by one run. The Wildcats are 20-24 overall and 7-13 in the conference entering the final two weeks of conference play. They play four games at Minnesota this weekend.
