Guignon, Duffy Advance to Third Round ITA Midwest Region Tourney

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Northwestern's senior Laura Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and sophomore Shannon Duffy (Plano, Texas/Plano) each advanced to Friday's third round of singles action at the ITA Women's Tennis Midwest Region Singles and Doubles Championships being held at the University of Notre Dame. The singles bracket started off with 64 participants. Guignon and Duffy are now two of 16 remaining players left in the field.
Duffy came out on top of two three-set matches in the first two rounds. She bested Kara Molony of Cincinnati, (6-1, 5-7, 6-2) and Marquette's Julia Sapozhnikova, (3-6, 6-1, 6-2), respectively.
Guignon knocked off Marquette's Laura Garcia in the first round, (7-6, 6-3). She defeated Wisconsin's Andrea Nathan in the second round, (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
Also competing in singles for Northwestern was sophomore Colleen Cheng (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and junior Katherine Nasser (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey). Cheng defeated Pamela Rodriguez of Butler, (6-4, 6-4), but then lost to Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso, (7-6 (6), 6-1). Nasser will move on to the single-elimination consolation bracket Friday.
In the 32-team doubles bracket, Cheng and Nasser fell out of the first round to Jana Hrdinova and Kim Simonsen, (1-6, 7-6, 7-5). The Wildcat duo will move on to Friday's doubles consolation draw against Karen Black and Brandee Fox of Evansville.
