Fall and Winter Sports Schedules Announced

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 1998-99 schedules for 12 Northwestern fall and winter sports teams are now available. Those schedules released are football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, women's cross country, field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer, women's fencing, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving and wrestling. Among the Wildcats' fall sports, the volleyball team opens play on September 1 against Illinois-Chicago. The following afternoon sees the men's soccer team traveling to UW-Milwaukee for its season opener. The women's soccer team, which advanced to last year's Big Ten Tournament championship game, will host Marquette in the season opener on September 4. The following day marks the return of women's cross country to varsity status as the Wildcats open the 1998 campaign at the Illinois-Chicago Invitational. Also on September 5, football entertains UNLV at Ryan Field while the field hockey team faces Wake Forest at the Big Ten-ACC Challenge in St. Louis.

Also highlighting the fall schedule is the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament, which Northwestern will host on November 13-15 at Lakeside Field.

This winter, the fencing team hosts the USFA Burton Open on October 10. The swimming teams open play Halloween weekend as the men host UW-Milwaukee on October 30 while the women host Michigan and Illinois the following afternoon. The wrestling team opens the season at the Michigan Open on November 7-8. Basketball season officially gets underway on Tue., Nov. 17, when the men host Maine in Welsh-Ryan Arena. The following evening, the women begin their regular season by hosting Cal-Santa Barbara.

Winter highlights include Northwestern serving as host for the men's and women's swimming meet between the U.S. National Teams and the Big Ten Conference All-Star Squads on November 13-14. Also, the 36th Annual Midlands Wrestling Championships will be held in Welsh-Ryan Arena on December 29-30.
