EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 1 seed Northwestern women's tennis team defeated No. 2 seed Wisconsin, 4-1, to capture the 1999 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship. It is the first Big Ten title for the Wildcats since 1986. Northwestern also claimed the conference crown in 1985.
"First of all, I want to congratulate Wisconsin on a great match," first-year NU head coach Claire Pollard said. "They fought really hard and brought out the best in us. I'm so excited for this program and these eight young women. As a new coach, I came in and demanded a lot from them and they have responded."
The 23rd-ranked 'Cats own victories in 12 of their last 13 duals, including 11-straight. All three victories at this weekend's championships were by 4-1 margins, including wins over eighth-seeded Purdue in the quarterfinals and fourth-seeded Illinois in the semifinals.
Northwestern improves to 18-4 overall. The team won the Big Ten regular season with a 9-1 record. NU will compete in the NCAA Regionals on May 14-16 at a site to be announced this week.
