EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern won the first half of the doubleheader behind another strong pitching performance by sophomore J.J. Standring (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita). Standring pitched his fourth complete game, allowing only one run. The NU offense was sparked by sophomore catcher Joe Hietpas' (Appleton, Wis./North) fourth inning home run. Dan Beers 28th career home run in the sixth inning tied the PSU career record.
In the second game, senior Phil Rosengren (Barrington, Ill./Rye Country Day) had a career high 11 strikeouts, but was outdueled by Dan McCall, who tied his own single game strikeout high with eight. Chris Netwall led the Nittany Lion offense with two doubles and a home run, while senior first baseman Nick Franzese (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) helped the 'Cats claw back into the game with a two-run home run in the final inning.
