Despite three home runs and a perfect 5-for-5 day from sophomore catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North), Northwestern dropped two-straight games on the road to Minnesota, 15-8 and 7-3 who has now won 31 of its last 37.
Hietpas hit his team-leading eighth, ninth and 10th home runs of the season. His two bombs in game one helped the Wildcats to a 8-7 lead by the sixth inning, but the Golden Gophers countered with eight runs, six of them unearned, in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Kurella (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) and senior first baseman Nick Franzese (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) also hit home runs for NU.
The 'Cats dropped game two despite another Hietpas homer and a complete game effort from senior right-hander Phil Rosengren (Barrington, Ill./Rye Country Day). Minnesota made three double plays and broke the game open on a foul pole-grand slam by Aron Amundsen.
