MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Despite 12 hits in two games, Northwestern was shut out twice en route to a four-game sweep to Minnesota, who has won 33 of its last 39 games. The Wildcats had complete game performances from freshman right-handers Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) in game one and Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) in game two.
Northwestern fell victim to some stellar Gopher defense in game one, and committed three errors of its own, yielding a two-run Robb Quinlan home run in the 8-0 loss. Senior third baseman Nick Franzese had two singles for the Wildcats.
In game two, NU gave up four runs in the first on two errors as the Wildcats cruised. Three double-figure Wildcat hitting streaks came to an end in the game. Junior second baseman J.P. Williamson (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) ended his hitting streak at 14 games, a Northwestern season high, in game one. A single in the first inning of game one by sophomore shortstop Jeremy Kurella (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) extended his streak to 13 games before he went hitless, and junior center fielder Bob Dainton (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) ended his hitting streak at 11 games.
