EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern (2-2) finished its weekend with a .500 record by defeating the University of Kansas 5-4 on the final day of the Oakland A's/Rawlings Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. The Wildcats built a 5-2 lead thanks in part to a home run by senior Nick Franzese (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), holding the Jayhawks off in the ninth inning to post the win. Sophomore J.J. Standring (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) threw eight and two-thirds innings of brilliant ball, striking out nine and giving up three earned runs on only three hits. Junior Ben Dodd (Belleville, Ill./West) threw the final third of the ninth to garner his first save. Sophomore Jeremy Kurella (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) was 3-for-5 on the day, making him 10-for-17 for the four-day tournament.
Northwestern next travels to Southeastern Louisiana for a four-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
