EVANSTON, Ill. — For the eighth straight year, Northwestern has accumulated 200-plus Academic All-Big Ten awards, the conference announced on Wednesday. The Wildcats finished the 2017-18 year with a total of 227 student-athletes receiving the recognition.
"At Northwestern, we pride ourselves on excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "For yet another year, Wildcats student-athletes have shown that their commitment to academic success is second-to-none, and I hope they know how proud they continue to make the entire Northwestern community."
In data released by the Conference, Northwestern totaled 84 spring and at-large Academic All-Big Ten recognitions, the fourth-straight year with at least 80 such honors in the spring.
Chicago's Big Ten Team was led by lacrosse's 26 winning student-athletes, which led all Big Ten lacrosse programs and marks a program record. Women's golf had a program-record eight student-athletes receive the awards — which equals 100 percent of all eligible student-athletes.
Men's golf and women's tennis also had all eligible student-athletes receive the honors while fencing posted double-digit winners for the fourth-straight season.
Eight Northwestern sports are eligible for spring awards. To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution carrying a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Earlier this month, 12 Northwestern varsity athletic programs received the nation's top Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their respective sports.
The conference office will also present the Distinguished Scholar Award in July. Qualifying students must be in at least their second year at their institution while earning at least a 3.7 GPA for the 2017-18 academic year.
