
Stary Earns Ranked Win at No. 1 Versus Vanderbilt

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern took on Vanderbilt at Combe Tennis Center Friday evening, dropping a narrow 4-3 contest to the Commodores.
The two squads evenly split the singles matches, as the visitors came away with the victory thanks to its early triumph in the doubles round.
In singles competition, the Wildcats tallied three wins against an opposing lineup that featured two highly-ranked players.
In the most exciting match of the night, Dominik Stary faced No. 52 Daniel Valent. After dropping the first, Stary took the second set to force a deciding third. In a thrilling back-and-forth finish, Stary took the victory in a come-from-behind, 13-11 final frame. The sophomore is now unbeaten in his last four singles appearances.
At No. 4, Ben Vandixhorn ground out a tough, three-set victory to give NU a second team point. The junior defeated Billy Rowe 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
No. 107 Antonioni Fasano also performed well at No. 3, winning in straight sets over Baker Newman. The first year took the tiebreak in the first set before cruising to a 6-1 victory in the second, notching a third team point for Northwestern and a second-straight singles win for the rookie.
Playing at No. 2 singles for the first time in his young career, Brookes matched up with the No. 50 player in the nation, Cameron Klinger. The rookie dropped the first frame before coming on strong in the second, as the set went to a tiebreak, but Klinger pulled out a narrow victory.
Vanderbilt also picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the one-point victory.
The 'Cats will be back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to face Harvard at 1 p.m. CT.
