A balanced attack led Northwestern up the leaderboard in the final round, with a trio of Wildcats finishing the day under par.
Junior Sarah Cho's final round 68 equaled the best single-round score by any of the field's 96 players over the three days in Georgia, and gave her a share of fifth-place overall. The San Diego native was flawless Wednesday, with 14 pars and four birdies on her card, and her 38 total pars during the competition led the team and ranked fifth in the field.
Classmate Hannah Kim was 2-over after seven holes on Wednesday, but fought her way back to 1-under for the day with a birdie on No. 9, and the back-to-back birdies to close out the round on Nos. 17&18. The 2017 Mary Fossum Award winner's T8 result is her best finish in three career NCAA Regional appearances.
Senior Kacie Komoto led the team with six birdies in the final round, on her way to a 2-under 70 and a share of 12th overall. The veteran ranked fifth in the field with a team-high 12 birdies over the 54 holes of competition.
Northwestern – 2/18 • 293-295-283 = 871 (+7)
T5 – Sarah CHO – 74-72-68=214 (-2)
T8 – Hannah KIM – 72-72-71=215 (-1)
T12 – Kacie KOMOTO – 72-75-70=217 (+1)
T63 – Stephanie LAU – 80-76-74=230 (+14)
T73 – Janet MAO – 75-79-78=232 (+16)
The final round 283, and Northwestern's 871 over three days of competition, are the best 18- and 54-hole NCAA Regional scores in program history. The 'Cats surged up the leaderboard, beginning the day tied for fifth but wrapping up the competition as runners-up, trailing only No. 3 Alabama. The team has now earned three consecutive Top-2 NCAA Regional finishes, dating back to 2015 in Raleigh, N.C.
The top six teams in each of four regions and the top three individuals not associated with one of those teams have advanced to the 2017 NCAA Championships, hosted by Northern Illinois University at Rich Harvest Farms, west of Chicago, from May 19-24.
The Wildcats, guided by head coach Emily Fletcher and assistant Beth Miller, are one of just six programs across the nation that have now qualified for five consecutive NCAA Championships. Northwestern is joined by Alabama, Duke, South Carolina, Southern California and Stanford in the elite club.
The Wildcats earned the best finish in program history at the 2016 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, a ninth-place result just one stroke away from the Top-8 and an invitation to the match play bracket.
