NEW YORK CITY – Nia Coffey was drafted fifth overall by the San Antonio Stars Thursday night in the first round of the 2017 WNBA Draft. She is the highest draft pick in Northwestern women's basketball history and joins Amy Jaeschke (2007-11) as the only two Wildcats to be selected since the league's inaugural season in 1997.
The draft was televised live to a national audience on ESPN2.
The San Antonio Stars are coming off a 7-27 record and are led by former WNBA All-Star and first-year head coach Vickie Johnson. The Stars share the AT&T Center with the San Antonio Spurs and return 2015 WNBA All-Star Kayla McBride, who led the team with 17.1 points per game.
Coffey leaves behind an impressive legacy at Northwestern and will be remembered as one of the greatest players in program history.
An outstanding senior season earned her First Team All-Big Ten honors for the fourth-straight year. Coffey was the only player in the nation to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. She scored in double figures 26 times, recorded 15 20-point games and reached 30 on three occasions.
Coffey was also recently named honorable mention All-America by both the WBCA and the Associated Press.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native is Northwestern's all-time leader in rebounds (1,183), free throws made (496) and consecutive double-digit scoring games (66), and she also holds the NU the record for most rebounds in a single season (344). She finished second all-time in points with 2,287, as well as second all-time in blocked shots with 229.
