EVANSTON, Ill. — On the heels of a dominant senior campaign, outsider hitter Symone Abbott has been selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-North Region team, it was announced Tuesday.
The Northville, Michigan, native was the linchpin to the Wildcat offense this season, posting a Big Ten-high 10.72 attacks per set, while finishing the regular season third in the conference with 4.00 kills per set.
The senior also ended her final campaign in the top-50 nationally in kills per set. She finished the season earning First Team All-Big Ten nods from the conference.
She finished her Northwestern career with the fourth-most kills in program history, becoming only the fourth NU player since 2000 to record more than 1,500 kills. Her 3.71 career kills per set clip is tied for the second best in Wildcat history, trailing only Stephanie Holthus' career mark of 3.77.
Abbott is the first Wildcat to be named to the All-North Region team since Holthus received the plaudits in 2013. Taylor Tashima is the most recent Wildcat to receive recognition from the AVCA, earning All-Region Honorable Mention in 2015.
Within the span of three matches this season (Indiana and Maryland), Abbott twice picked up 29 kills, tied for the fifth-most in a single contest in NU history, and the most since 1997.
Abbott helped lead the Wildcats to a .245 team hitting percentage, the best single-season mark in program history.
Of the 14 players named to the All-North Region team, 13 of them hail from the Big Ten. Northwestern is represented as one of five conference schools on the list.
AVCA All-America selections will be announced next week.
