EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action this weekend, hosting the prestigious TYR Invitational beginning Friday, Nov. 17 at the Norris Aquatics Center and running through the weekend. Prelims will start on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 18) and Sunday (Nov. 19) at 9 a.m., while the finals sessions are set for 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Northwestern will be joined this weekend by Fresno State (women), Grand Canyon, Illinois State (women diving), Michigan State, Ohio (women) Saint Louis, Truman State and UIC.
Both the men's and women's squads took first place in the 2016 TYR Invitational last year.
The men's swimming and diving team looks to bounce back following a 162-115 defeat to Wisconsin last time out. The Wildcats posted six top times and a pair of first-place finishes in swimming events, but it wasn't enough to beat the Badgers. DJ Hwang swam a season-best 9:16.77 in the 1,000 free event, while Jack Thorne and Alex Snarski posted season-best times of their own to place 1-2 in the 100 back event.
Junior Will Hofstadter finished first in the 100 breaststroke event at 56.58, tying his season-best time.
Ben Magliato made his return from injury last weekend and swept all three events against the Badgers.
A short-handed women's swimming and diving team also fell to Wisconsin, 161-130, despite strong showings from first years Calypso Sheridan and Sophie Angus. The duo paced the 200-yard medley relay team along with Nicole Aarts and Anna Keane to a second-place finish at 1:43.86.
Sheridan also took first in the 400 individual medley at 4:21.85. Angus picked up a first-place finish of her own in the 100 breaststroke event at 1:03.86, her fourth victory in the event in as many meets.
On the diving board, Junior Olivia Rosendahl and first-year Sarah Gardner posted season-best scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Rosendahl took first with scores of 318.76 and 358.28 respectively, while Gardner finished third with scores of 258.08 and 212.63. The 3-meter event also saw Eryn Scannell score a career-best 294.83 to take second.
