EVANSTON, Ill. — Five Northwestern student-athletes were awarded the prestigious Irving Kabiller Memorial Award on Sunday night, earning a $5,000 grant for professional development use.

Human development & psychological services major Hannah Davison (women's soccer), journalism and economics double major Jenny Haskel (women's soccer), biomedical engineering major Grace Kelly (cross country), neuroscience major Janet Mao (women's golf), and economics major Luke Norland (wrestling) won the award that was announced at the annual Wildcat Professional Excellence Program (WPEP) at the Kellogg Global Hub.

The Kabiller Award is a major component of Northwestern's transformative NU for Life program, which seeks to prepare student-athletes for their post-collegiate careers through the Wildcat network.

Last year's recipients of the award — Tommy Doles (football), Kaherine Senseman (women's swimming and diving), and Dylan Wu (men's golf) — presented their Kabiller experience Sunday afternoon.

Doles, a political science major, used the grant money to pay for a week-long mission trip to Perú over spring break as well as a trip to Washington, D.C. to speak with leaders from a variety of intelligence agencies.

Senseman used last year's Kabiller Award to advance her understanding of the data and education by participating in a pair of data conferences, "Educators Run on Data" and the "Women in Statistics and Data Science Conference." Senseman, a statistics major, discovered more about analytical trends at the conferences but, perhaps more importantly, said that she found a renewed sense of confidence in her ability to secure meaningful, post-graduation employment.

Finally, Wu was able to secure a behind-the-scenes working experience with The Northern Trust golf tournament, in order to understand the motivations of financial institutions to sponsor PGA TOUR events. The Medford, Oregon, native said that he was energized at the existence of golf-centric careers if his dream of a professional golf career does not become a reality.

NU for Life began in 2012 following a generous donation to Northwestern Athletics by David Kabiller, a member of the University's Board of Trustees and a former Wildcat tennis player, and is overseen by Julie Hammer, Assistant A.D. for Career Enhancement and Employer Relations. Kabiller continues to have a hands-on role in the program, providing direct support to student-athletes and directing the strategic vision of NU for Life.

The award, named in honor of David's late father, is now in its fifth class of recipients. Student-athletes are required to submit an application that details their intended use for the funds, as well as interview with the NU for Life department.

The award-winners were announced at WPEP, the yearly event aimed at providing student-athletes in their junior year the chance to meet and learn from preeminent professionals, giving the 'Cats insight into a network of industry leaders to call upon for connections and advice.

More than 40 professionals attended this year's WPEP, representing diverse backgrounds and positions with organizations in consulting, finance, medicine, journalism, law, and many more. Over the course of five networking sessions of twenty minutes each, all of the approximately 100 Northwestern student-athletes who attended WPEP met in small groups with five different professionals of their choosing.
