IOWA CITY, Iowa — Despite a couple of tight sets, the Wildcats fell to Iowa on Saturday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in three sets.
Senior middle blocker Gabrielle Hazen led the team with four blocks, while senior outside hitter Symone Abbott paced the squad with 13 kills. Senior setter Symone Abbott came only one dig away from notching a double-double.
First-year middle hitter Alana Walker posted another strong offensive performance, hitting .353 (8 kills, 2 errors, 17 attacks) against the Hawkeyes.
The Wildcats came out of the gate slow against Iowa, but rebounded to tie the score at 11 points apiece. Northwestern would put their foot on the gas and led Iowa, 18-15, which forced a Hawkeye timeout.
NU came out of the pause strong, led by a kill by senior outside hitter Symone Abbott as soon as play resumed, but were felled by the Iowa offense, 25-23.
The first set was a defensive struggle, as both teams combined for seven blocks. Iowa hit .200 in the match opener, while Northwestern hit .162.
Northwestern again played Iowa to an extremely close set in the second game, but lost, 25-21. A kill by first-year outside hitter Nia Robinson evened up the score at 17 points apiece in a taut moment, but the Hawkeyes finished the set stronger.
Chicago's Big Ten Team posted their best single-set hitting percentage in the third game, but were again unable to overcome Iowa's attack. Northwestern went on to fall, 25-18.
The Wildcats return home and host Rutgers on Oct. 25 at historic Beardsley Gym in Evanston Township High School.
