EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team heads to Ypsilanti, Mich. to begin the 2017-2018 season with a dual meet against Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
The Wildcats are primed begin their ninth season under head coach Jarod Schroeder.
This marks the seventh straight year that the Wildcats open up against Eastern Michigan. Northwestern has come out on top in four of the last six meets, which includes a 167-128 victory last season. Eastern Michigan opens the 2017-18 season after claiming its 34th Mid-American Conference championship last season.
At last year's meet, several Wildcats showcased what they bring to the table this season as returners.
Thanas Kountroubis and Will Hofstadter finished 1-2 in the 100 breast against the Eagles in 2016. The pair returns for their junior campaigns as Northwestern's top 100 and 200 breaststroke swimmers. Hofstadter is coming off an eighth-place finish in the 100 breast at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 53.59, which ranked as the second on NU's all-time depth chart.
Junior Justin Hanson won the 200 fly and 200 breast events at last year's meet against EMU, and he returns after finishing last season as the Wildcats' fastest 200 fly competitor.
Senior Almog Olshtein took the top spot in the 50 and 100-yard free events. He swam Northwestern's fastest time in both events last season, and he finished 17th in the 50 free at the Big Ten Championships.
In the diving events, Ben Magliato was second on the team in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, and he finished in the top-24 in all three at the Big Ten Championships, including 18th place in the platform.
In addition to 15 returners, the Wildcats welcome eight new members to the program.
