Β
Northwestern (1-4-0, 0-1-0 B1G) enters the game against Wisconsin having dropped four consecutive matches. Three of NU's four losses have come in one-score games, including Friday's 1-0 defeat in its Big Ten opener at Ohio State.
Β
The 'Cats are led by senior captains Brandon Medina and Jeffrey Hopson, who have both tallied a pair of penalty-kick goals this season. The duo ranks in the top-10 among the Big Ten in both goals (2) and goals per game (0.40).
Β
Francisco Tomasino has started all five games in net this season. He has made 16 saves and has a 1.82 goals against average. Tomasino's 16 saves and 3.20 saves per game rank him second among league goal keepers.
Β
Wisconsin is off to a 2-1-1 start to the season and 1-0-0 record in league play. The Badgers topped Michigan, 2-1 (2OT), last weekend to begin their conference slate with a victory.
Β
Tom Barlow is Wisconsin's point-leader with four points, having scored a pair of game-winning goals in four games. Phillipp Schilling has seen all the action in net this season, posting 12 saves and a 0.68 goals against average. His GAA mark and .800 save percentage rank second in the Big Ten Conference.
Β
Last season, Northwestern fell at Wisconsin, 2-1, in the 2015 regular-season finale. Before that meeting, the Wildcats owned a five-match unbeaten streak against the Badgers. NU picked up victories in each season dating back to 2010, except for in 2012 when the clubs played to a draw.
Β
HEEEEE'S BACK
Senior Brandon Medina returned to the pitch in 2016 after missing last year with a leg injury. Media scored two goals against Florida Gulf Coast in the opener, both on penalty kicks, in his first game back since 2014.
Β
The first penalty kick that Media buried in the opener was the first-ever goal scored at the new Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. The second PK was the eventual game-winner.
Β
In 34 career games, Medina has accounted for 22 points on six goals and 10 assists. Three of Medina's six career goals have been game-winners.
Β
BIG TEN PRESEASON HONORS
Seniors Brandon Medina, Nathan Dearth and Jeffrey Hopson have earned Big Ten Preseason Honors.
Β
Dearth has started and played in every game the last two seasons. He is the returning minutes leader from the 2015 team, where he finished the campaign with a goal and two assists. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2015.
Β
Hopson enters his final campaign in Purple having played in every game during his career (63) and has started in 47 consecutive games. He tallied a career-high three assists in 2015 and chipped in a goal in the season opener against Colgate.
Β
THE CAPTAINS
Coach Tim Lenahan has named Nate Dearth, Jeffrey Hopson and Brandon Medina as the team's captains heading into the 2016 campaign.
Β
HEAD COACH β TIM LENAHAN
Head coach Tim Lenahan enters his 16th season at the helm of the Wildcats. During his tenure, he has taken the program to the NCAA Tournament on nine occasions and won the Big Ten regular season twice (2011, 2012) in addition to one conference tournament title in 2011. Last season, Lenahan earned his 150th victory as NU's head coach when the 'Cats topped Penn State, 2-1, on Nov. 11, 2015.
