EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern junior Strong Kirchheimer was named the Big Ten men's tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Kirchheimer posted a perfect 8-0 record combined between singles and doubles over the last week. Three of his eight wins came against ranked opponents.

He went 4-0 in singles play, highlighted by a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over No. 54 Guillermo Nunez of TCU at the No. 3 position in the Wildcats' near upset of the third-ranked Horned Frogs. He also scored the match-clinching point for Northwestern on Friday with a three-set win over Purdue's Ricky Medinilla.

The Northwestern junior is 21-3 (15-1) so far in the 2015-16 season. His .875 winning percentage currently ranks second all-time at Northwestern for a single season.

Kirchheimer and doubles partner Fedor Baev were a force last week at the No. 1 spot. The duo knocked off a pair of ranked opponents in TCU's No. 67 Hudson Blake and Reese Stalder and Indiana's No. 78 Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk. Four wins for the NU tandem increased their 2016 record to 11-4.

Chicago's Big Ten Team won matches against No. 54 Purdue, Indiana and IUPUI to improve to 17-2. The Wildcats are off to a 3-0 start in Big Ten play.

The award is the first of the season for Kirchheimer and the second of his career. He is the second Wildcat to be named Athlete of the Week as teammate Sam Shropshire earned the honor on March 15 for his role in the team's win over then-No. 7 Illinois.

The 13th-ranked Wildcats are back in action on Friday when No. 30 Wisconsin comes to Evanston for a 6 p.m. match at the Combe Tennis Center.
