MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Maggie Lyon moved atop the all-time three-point list at Northwestern with her 245th career make in the third quarter Wednesday night at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
Lyon knocked down three shots from beyond the arc in the first half to tie the record, previously held by Michele Ratay (1992-97). With 2:58 left in the third quarter, Lyon hit the shot that earned her a place in Northwestern basketball history.
Nia Coffey scored a team-high 27 points, 19 of which came in the third quarter. Most of those aided the Wildcats on a 15-1 run that allowed them to erase a 14-point deficit and tie the game at 66.
92 points wasn't enough to save Northwestern on the road, as Minnesota shot a blistering 47 percent and made 11 threes to secure a 95-92 victory. Senior Rachel Banham had a game-high 32 points for the Gophers.
The Wildcats actually shot better in the game, making 50 percent of their shots, much of that coming from a 67 percent mark in the second half.
For the 12th time this season, four Wildcats reached double figures in points. Coffey led the way with her 27, followed by Lyon with 22, Christian Inman with 15 and Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah had 13.
Northwestern scored 41 points in the first half on 49 percent shooting. Minnesota just shot better in the first 20 minutes, scoring 52 points on 53 percent from the field. The Gophers used two separate 6-0 runs in the second quarter to help build their halftime lead.
Kunaiyi-Akpanah scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. She ended the night with her second career double-double, tallying 12 boards.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns home Sunday to face Indiana in a game broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
