EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head men's basketball coach Bill Carmody has announced the promotion of Tavaras Hardy to the position of associate head coach. The 2011-12 season marks Hardy's sixth season on NU's coaching staff.
"I am pleased to announce Tavaras' promotion," Carmody said. "He has a tremendous ability to relate to young men through his own personal experiences as a student-athlete here at Northwestern. His work ethic and commitment have been vital in getting this program on the right track. Tavaras has a great passion for Northwestern Basketball and will be an outstanding head coach in the near future."
A 2002 graduate of Northwestern, Hardy was a four-year letterwinner, three-time team MVP and two-time All-Big Ten selection as a player for the Wildcats. As a member of the team's staff, Hardy has proven to be an outstanding recruiter and has helped NU to postseason appearances each of the last three seasons.
"I am sincerely grateful to Coach Carmody for his continued guidance and trust, as I assist him in building Northwestern Basketball into a championship program," said Hardy. "I would also like to thank Dr. Jim Phillips and the athletic administration for their efforts and support throughout this process. Northwestern University is home for me and my family. I had the pleasure of meeting my wife, Billee, during our time as students here and we have been personal witnesses to the tremendous opportunities NU offers to student-athletes. I am honored to accept the new leadership responsibilities that come with the role of associate head coach at my alma mater.
"As a staff, we will continue to work tirelessly to recruit the best basketball players, both locally and nationally, and we will never sacrifice the true student-athlete experience. Currently, we have a talented group that is hungry to win championships, while at the same time they strive for excellence in all that they do off the court. The players, past and present, are what makes this job special and I could not be more excited about the future of our program."
"Tavaras has proven to be a great asset in our men's basketball program creating a winning culture," Phillips said. "He's a tireless worker and a terrific representative of Northwestern University who has a palpable passion for his job. I'm pleased that he has accepted this new leadership role within the program and I'm confident he'll continue to help the team excel, both on and off the court."
